Development of a technology for preparing ultra-low carbon and pipe metal, eliminating additional heating and chemical composition adjustment after the vacuuming operation

R&D. Finished steel grade immediately after vacuuming. In trial heats of ultra-low carbon steels, specific aluminum consumption was reduced by almost half

Work performed

Dependence of oxygen on carbon
A mathematical model of ultra-low carbon steel treatment in the Ruhrstahl-Heraeus (RH) vacuum degasser was developed. The dependence of the residual equilibrium oxygen content on the final carbon content in the liquid metal was obtained. Analysis of industrial heat records made it possible to determine the necessary equilibrium residual oxygen content in the liquid metal prior to vacuuming to achieve the specified residual carbon concentrations.
Effect of oxidation level on carbon
Using the mathematical model, calculations were performed to determine the effect of the initial metal oxidation level on achieving the final carbon content in the metal.
Refined aluminum heating coefficient
The coefficient of metal temperature increase per 1 kg of aluminum addition was refined. The client received further recommendations regarding the metal temperature limits before vacuuming.
