Ensuring perfect cropping of rolled strip ends using a shear

2022 Digital Project "Digital Olympus"

As part of the project, specialists installed a stereoscopic width gauge with a laser strip speed meter and a scanning metal detector on the mill. The new system made it possible to reduce specific metal consumption per rolled product, increase the accuracy of cropping the ends of the rolled bar, and reduce the number of emergency mill stops. The planned economic effect of the project, in which LLC MMK-Informservice, LLC OSK, and Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University participated, is 35 million rubles per year.

About the project

Each rolled strip at the exit of the roughing group of the hot rolling mill has an irregular head and tail shape, which is corrected in the "crop shear" to obtain coils without end defects at the mill exit.

Strip end shape

An accurate representation of the end shape of each strip is produced.

Virtual line for each cut

Finding a virtual line for each cut linked to a fixed point on the rolled strip.

Tracking the virtual line

Tracking the virtual cutting line to the shear.

Shear control along the cutting line

Controlling the shear mechanism so that the actual cutting line coincides with the ideal virtual cutting line.

Advantage

High accuracy. The highest number of measurements per second. Operation on fairly cold metal.

Import substitution

This system is a replacement for the foreign KELK hardware base.
